Today, the U.S. Charge d’Affaires Maria Brewer handed over travel documents to 26 pioneer leaders from Northern Nigeria to participate in this year’s Washington Fellows for Young African Leaders (YALI). YALI is a signature program of President Barack Obama’s to invest in the next generation of African leaders.
In the month of March, the U.S. Mission interviewed and recruited 45 leaders from more than 15,000 applications submitted from Nigeria. 26 candidates were finally selected as YALI finalists from northern Nigeria. Another 19 fellows were also selected from the southern region of Nigeria. In addition, eight of the 45 finalists were selected to participate in internships. These successful leaders will be flying Nigeria’s flag for six-weeks in leadership training in the United States.
