Melissa A. Jones was sworn-in as USAID’s Mission Director to Nigeria on September 29, 2023.  Most recently, she served as the Deputy Assistant Administrator in the Bureau for Global Health.  Throughout her career, Ms. Jones has been on the forefront of advancing the development sector, serving in senior leadership roles in countries across Africa and Asia. She is well-known for leading worldwide teams of subject-matter experts and executives to develop evidence-based solutions to solve some of the most pressing development challenges.

Trained as an epidemiologist, and a member of the Senior Foreign Service, Ms. Jones’ public health career spans three decades, with areas of expertise in maternal and child health, nutrition, health systems, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases. She likewise has played important roles in U.S. government interagency and donor coordination partnering with national governments to implement sector-wide health programs and result-based initiatives.

Before joining USAID, Ms. Jones worked more than a decade in disease prevention and control at the University of California, Office of the President, and at the San Francisco Department of Public Health, where she served in the AIDS Office and in the Bureau of Epidemiology and Disease Control.

She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Washington, and a Master of Public Health from San Francisco State University, with coursework at the University of California-Berkeley, School of Public Health.
