Security Alert – Heightened Police Activity in Abuja City – U.S. Mission to Nigeria (July 5, 2018)

Location:  Abuja city, Abuja Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria.

Event:  The Embassy has received credible reports that seven Nigerian police were killed July 3 in a violent incident upon the “airport road” between central Abuja city and the Namdi Azikiwe International Airport.  The Embassy community is observing the security guidance of the subsequently issued police notice that informs the populace that there will be an increased police presence in Abuja and at entry points into the city.  The police advise avoiding night movements and late evening activities for the near future.  They also ask that the community approach local police with a good attitude and avoid confrontation. The notice recommends avoiding the Games Village, Sunnyvale, and Galadimawa areas after dark.

  • Exercise caution when walking or driving at night
  • Review travel routes and times to reduce time and place predictability
  • Review your personal security plans
  • Stay alert in public places, including schools, hospitals, churches, tourist locations, and transportation hubs
  • Carry proper Identification, including a U.S. passport with a current Nigerian visa
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Keep a low profile
  • Monitor local media for updates
  • Report social media threats to local authorities
