Secretary Kerry’s Meeting With Nigerian President Buhari

Secretary Kerry met with Nigerian President Buhari today on the margins of the COP22 in Marrakech.

President Buhari updated the Secretary on his government’s ongoing efforts to combat systemic corruption, defeat Boko Haram, and address the serious humanitarian situation in northern Nigeria. Secretary Kerry pledged continued U.S. support as Nigeria tackles these challenges and thanked President Buhari for being a strong partner in international efforts to counter violent extremism.

President Buhari and Secretary Kerry also discussed the instability in the Niger Delta region, and the Secretary encouraged continued efforts by the Government of Nigeria to address this situation.‎ ‎ Finally, Secretary Kerry made clear that the United States remains committed to helping Nigeria address its security, political, and economic challenges.‎
