Routine Message: Impact of Border Closings on U.S. Citizens
5 MINUTE READ
March 26, 2020

Location: Nigeria

Event: Since the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority closed all international airports to commercial flights, many American citizens in Nigeria have contacted the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos expressing an interest in returning to the United States.  The Embassy and Consulate are working on appropriate solutions to help citizens evacuate within the next week or two.

At this time, travel within Nigeria is not restricted.  However, some domestic flights have been cancelled, and we anticipate movement restrictions within and between states may occur in the near future.  Therefore, if you wish to return to the United States on a one-way flight organized by the U.S. Department of State, we encourage you to travel to Abuja or Lagos as soon as possible.  Please note the flight will not be free; reimbursement to the U.S. government for the full cost of the flight will be a requirement.  Important Note:  The Embassy and Consulate are unable to assist with lodging, food, or transportation costs and some hotels have closed or are closing.  Please keep this in mind as you decide whether to travel to Abuja or Lagos.
