Remarks by Country Public Affairs Officer Aruna Amirthanayagam – Daniel Pearl World Music Day 2019

  • Welcome to the Daniel Pearl World Music Days Concert. It is my pleasure to host this event tonight with Jake’s.
  • The theme for this year’s commemoration is, “Harmony for Humanity.” There could not be a better time for all of us to harmonize for humanity.
  • We’re excited about the incredible musical line-up set to perform this evening and I hope you enjoy it as much as I will.
  • Daniel Pearl found fulfilment in his work as a journalist and his love for music. He believed in freedom – freedom of information, freedom of expression, freedom of worship, and freedom of assembly.
  • Tragically, his life was brutally taken by people without a soul and who believed in the opposite. They were evil people that thrived on ignorance and oppression.
  • We are here today not just to promote a rhythmic calm in the minds and hearts of those present tonight but, to remind all of us that individual accountability and reconciliation are required for harmony.
  • We are here to reaffirm our commitment to international friendship, by taking a stand against the divisive forces that took Daniel Pearl’s life.

We are here to reaffirm our commitment to the values of peace, tolerance and freedom to ensure their sanctity.
